The NT Planning Commission is seeking feedback on the development of a proposed Strategic Directions Planning Policy.

Why develop this policy?

The Strategic Directions Planning Policy (SDPP) will provide an overarching, high-level framework to guide future strategic land use and development decisions in the Northern Territory (NT).

The SDPP will establish strategic planning policy directions to further the objectives of the NT Planning Act 1999.

The objectives of the Act seek to:

  • protect the quality of life of future generations.
  • maintain the health of the natural environment and ecological processes.
  • assist the provision of public utilities, infrastructure and facilities for the benefit of the community.
  • promote the sustainable development of land.
  • promote the good design of buildings and other works that respects the amenity of the locality.
  • assist the conservation and enhancement of places, areas, buildings, other works and landforms that are of cultural, aesthetic, architectural or historical value.

The SDPP will be delivered through the creation and/or review of strategic land use plans and strategic planning policies contained within the NT Planning Scheme 2020. Collectively these plans and policies help inform how and where change can take place, whether it be in a city, suburb or regional community.

How can you get involved?

It is important that the community, industry and stakeholders have a say to help us better understand and respond to the issues and aspirations for future land use and development.

We want to hear from individuals and organisations from across the NT on the range of issues and topics that the Strategic Directions Planning Policy should address.

We have prepared a discussion paper that:

  • provides context to strategic planning in the NT
  • identifies a range of possible themes/topics to underpin the SDPP
  • defines the role of strategic planning in relation to these themes/topics
  • includes possible high-level strategic policy directions

After reading the discussion paper, you can give us feedback and have input to the development of the Strategic Directions Planning Policy by:

  1. using the survey or quick note tools on this page
  2. uploading a written submission
  3. sending an email to ntpc@nt.gov.au

Submissions close on 31 August 2024.

You can win a YETI Rambler!

Simply provide your feedback on the discussion paper by using the survey or quick notes tools, or uploading a written submission before the closing date for submissions and include your contact details for your chance to win.

The Northern Territory Planning Commission is encouraging Territorians to have their say on future land use planning policy in the NT.

The Strategic Directions Planning Policy will provide an overarching, high-level framework to guide strategic land use and development decisions.

NT Planning Commission Chair Dr David Ritchie encourages everyone to get involved. “This consultation is an important first step to enable the Northern Territory Planning Commission to deliver a high-level strategic planning policy document which will frame and inform all future strategic land use planning across the entire Northern Territory.

“The Planning Commission has been fortunate to have worked with the community on the development of many strategic land use plans. The discussion paper seeks to recognise and build on what the community has previously communicated, provides a background on the NT’s social, economic and environmental context and outlines some initial thoughts on future goals and measures.

“This consultation provides a chance for people to have their say on how the Territory should grow and respond to the challenges of the future. It provides an opportunity to reflect on the past and to respond proactively to the challenges of the future. I encourage everyone with an interest in the Territory’s future to contribute to the development of this policy.”
