Katherine Flood Mitigation

Consultation has concluded

The Katherine Flood Mitigation Advisory Committee was formed in 2015 to recommend flood mitigation measures to minimise the impact of flooding in Katherine.

The $25 million Katherine Flood Mitigation Project has been progressing and several of the committee’s recommendations have been implemented, including:

  • land use planning measures, including assessing and planning for a neighbourhood commercial centre in Katherine East
  • building a new ambulance centre in Katherine East
  • constructing headworks associated with the new ambulance centre
  • flood resilience measures to support improved whole of town flood preparedness and the coordinated response and recovery.

A hydraulic flood model was created to test different options and the viability of levee banks, detention basins and drainage upgrades.

Preliminary flood modelling has identified that a combination of levee banks along the Lockheed drain from Auster Street to Stuart Highway and along the eastern side of the Victoria Highway as well as upgraded drainage will provide the greatest reduction in flood impact for a smaller flood event.

The levee design proposed will include a combination of earth embankment, concrete wall and temporary levee for road crossings.
