Consultation has concluded

The NT Department of Education is proposing models to enable the registration and improve the professional recognition and career progression of all Early Childhood (EC) teachers in the NT, including those working in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) settings.

A discussion paper has been released for public consultation. Stakeholders are invited to share their views on the proposed models with all submissions and survey responses due by 15 March 2024.

Why is EC teacher registration in ECEC settings being recommended?

The Northern Territory Government has made a commitment under the Shaping our Future – National Early Childhood Education and Care Workforce Strategy (the Strategy), to implement EC teacher registration in ECEC settings, including non-school settings.

This consultation will form part of the first phase of implementing EC teacher registration in the NT, which is scheduled to commence in 2026.

Have your say

You can provide your feedback on the discussion paper via:

  • a short survey - the survey will take 5-15 minutes depending on the level of feedback you provide; or
  • written submission.

We ask that organisations respond via submission and individuals respond via survey or submission.

Responses will inform the selection of an EC teacher registration model that is representative of stakeholder needs and wants.

NTG highly values the important role that early childhood teachers and educators contribute to children’s learning and development. This reform will strengthen the quality and professional recognition of teachers working across the ECEC sector.

This consultation is seeking the perspectives of stakeholders on the benefits and possible drawbacks of the different aspects of EC teacher registration and its effects on the ECEC sector and education system in the NT more broadly. This information will enable a balanced and evidence-based approach to determining the most appropriate model to implement EC teacher registration in the NT that maintains alignment with national policy directions.
