The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics is planning for the future duplication of Vanderlin Drive from McMillans Road to the Stuart Highway intersection.

Stage 1 community and stakeholder consultation ran from 8 November 2023 to 6 December 2023. Feedback collected during this round of consultation is being captured in a consultation report. The report will help inform an updated concept design for the duplication.

An updated concept design will be presented to stakeholders and the community as part of stage 2 consultation in 2024.

Background

The stretch of Vanderlin Drive that runs between the Stuart Highway and McMillans Road forms part of the National Transport Link providing access to East Arm Port, the airport, hospital and Darwin’s northern suburbs.

Along this stretch of road, Vanderlin Drive narrows to a single lane in each direction and intersects with several adjoining local roads.

The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics has previously received feedback from the public regarding property access, pedestrian crossings, bus stop locations, shared path access and safety at intersections.

Draft concept design

A draft concept design to improve traffic flow and road safety was prepared and presented in stage 1 consultation. It included:

  • expanding the road to two lanes in both directions to improve traffic flow
  • turning lanes to provide safe exits for vehicles
  • adding signals at the following intersections on Vanderlin Drive:
    1. McMillans Road
    2. Boulter Road
    3. Secrett Road
  • upgrading shared paths and bus stops for safer access and connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists
  • improving landscaping and amenity along the road verge.
