- The Darwin City Deal is a joint initiative between the Australian Government, the Northern Territory Government (NTG) and City of Darwin. It delivers a 10-year plan for the Darwin City Centre that addresses Darwin’s unique challenges and puts our city on the path to economic prosperity and sustainable growth.

- The Education and Community Precinct (ECP) is a key part of the Darwin City Deal, bringing together the Australian and NT Governments and Charles Darwin University (CDU).
- Located centrally on Cavenagh Street, the campus enables engagement with the wider community; offering public spaces for use and learning and education opportunities in line with the Darwin City Deal vision to reinvigorate Darwin’s CBD.
- Culturally diverse, vibrant, and known as the gateway to the Asia Pacific, Darwin’s location as a far north tropical city sets it apart from the rest of Australia. The CBD campus will provide an opportunity for a growing population and to improve Darwin’s international competitiveness in the education sector.
- Moving the NT Library to the ECP is an NT Government commitment as part of the Darwin City Deal.
- NT Library is moving to a more publicly accessible space at the ECP, Cavenagh Street, Darwin.
- The new location of the NT Library is part of Darwin’s CBD activation under the Darwin City Deal.
- The NT Library will be a place to learn about, share and celebrate Territory history, culture and stories.
- The new location will foster greater collaboration with CDU and enable LANT to activate its collections to generate new ideas for the Territory’s future: i.e. a library both about our past and for our future.
- The NT Library is not merging with CDU Library. The NT Library remains the ‘state library’ with no diminution of responsibilities or functions.
- The NT Library is moving to the ECP to provide improved public access to Library and Archives NT spaces, programs, services and collections.
- Developing library services at the ECP is an investment in education which is key to the Territory’s future.
- The cost will be determined after the consultation and design process is complete.
- As part of the Darwin City Deal, the NT Library will move from Parliament House to the ECP in early 2024.
- Construction of the ECP project is expected to be completed by late 2023.
- The new NT Library will enrich the visitor experience through shared services and will bring the library experience to people based in remote communities through digital collections, virtual events and online programs.
