Museum of the Northern Territory

The Government is investing in a major new Museum and associated works as part of its plan to transform the Darwin CBD into a vibrant, world-class tourism destination. This new Museum, referred to as the Museum of the Northern Territory, will incorporate the Territory’s continuous history including that of Aboriginal peoples, the world’s most ancient living culture. The Museum will embody what it means to be a Territorian.

The site for the new Museum is located at Myilly Point on the iconic site of the former Kahlin Compound and Old Darwin Hospital. It will encompass curatorial level displays, artefacts, and interpretative and digital displays depicting the history of the Northern Territory and its people, past and present. The Museum will also include specialist thematic collections and displays, and individual gallery spaces.

A consultant team led by award-winning architects troppo+ARM has been engaged to undertake community consultations and develop the design brief of this project.

The Museum of the Northern Territory is one of the major projects announced by the NT Government under its $100 Million City Deal to revitalise the Darwin CBD.
