The Department of Housing, Local Government and Community Development is reforming local government legislation to support councils to practice good governance and to engage in greater transparency and accountability. Now we want to hear from you!
As part of the second tranche of legislative amendments to the Local Government Act 2019, we are releasing three detailed discussion papers that you can give feedback on. Part A is available to view now, with Part B and C set to be released by 9 May 2025.
The papers cover a wide range of topics, with each paper focusing on specific areas of the legislation.
Part A focuses on practical amendments to delegations, procurement, and regulatory improvements.
Part B details proposed changes to superannuation payments, rating frameworks and principal member appointment, requiring more in-depth policy consideration.
Part C is dedicated to proposed amendments to the Code of Conduct. Given the foundational role the Code of Conduct plays in shaping the integrity and behaviour of elected members, a separate paper on this topic is being released to allow for more detailed feedback and discussion.
Providing feedback on these discussion papers will help us improve the legislation that underpins how councils function, supporting strong and responsive local government across the Northern Territory.
We are especially interested to hear from the local government sector and organisations who work closely with local government, as well as the broader community.
You can share your thoughts by completing our online surveys below or by emailing a formal submission to LGLaw.CMC@nt.gov.au
In addition to providing feedback online, you can also make your voice heard by attending one of our upcoming public forums. Please check the department webpage for further information about online information sessions and community-based consultations.
All feedback, written submissions and community consultation will be completed by 20 June 2025.
