Help us develop a Weed Management Plan for buffel grass.

In July 2024, buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris and C. pennisetiformis) was formally declared a weed under the Northern Territory Weeds Management Act 2001 due to its significant negative impacts on biodiversity, cultural values and practices, and fire regimes.

A draft Buffel Grass Weed Management Plan 2026-2036 (the Plan) has been developed, providing additional details as to how buffel grass is to be managed and regulated in the Northern Territory. This draft Plan is now available for public comment. Public comment will be considered by the Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment prior to the Plan being finalised.

Please note: the Plan focuses on the legislative aspects of what is required to comply with the Weeds Management Act 2001.

During development of the draft Plan, significant feedback was received urging the setting of broader targets, undertaking specific management, research actions, and resource allocation. Any feedback of this nature cannot be incorporated into the final Plan, but where relevant, will be used to inform actions undertaken by the Department of Lands, Planning and Environment (DLPE) as part of its Buffel Grass Management Program, and by other stakeholders as part of their land management responsibilities.
