Local Government Representation Reviews are held after each Local Government Council periodic general election in the NT. Submissions are now open for the 2026 Local Government Representation Review.
Part of the review process is seeking opinions, facts and viewpoints on existing representation structures from Local Government Councils, other stakeholders and the public. When making recommendations about local government boundaries and representation structuresmatters such as population trends, communities of interest and physical features of the local government council areas are considered. Providing a submissionwill help the Committee identify where there could be changes that may improve community representation at the local government (or council) level in the NT.
The review also offers a way for members of the public to better understand how their Local Government Council works, its structure and what it delivers to the community.
An independent Local Government Representation Committee will consider matters as required under Part 3.2 of theLocal Government Act 2019 andsubmissions received during consultationbefore preparing a preliminary report for further consultation. A final report with recommendations will be provided to the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Community Development who will make a final decision on any changes to representation structures.
These recommendations ensure all voters are fairly represented.
