Consultation has concluded
The Northern Territory Government values the important role the arts play in shaping the Territory’s culture. The arts also enhance community life and contribute to economic growth.
The Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities, through Arts NT, is developing an arts strategy for the Territory. The strategy aims to inform arts sector and government priorities and will guide government investment into the arts over the next 10 years.
Over 300 people contributed to the development of the NT Arts Strategy. Arts NT met face-to-face and online with close to 230 artists, arts organisations, and the broader community with interest in the arts and 71 written submissions were received.
Key themes from the consultation include:
Increase funding with simplified grants processes to acknowledge increased costs of operating and living
Improve and increase arts infrastructure with establishing of arts hubs
Ensure cultural safety for First Nations people and ensure that First Nations initiatives are First Nations -led
Foster youth arts and embed arts into school education
Support safe and healthy employment for artists, arts workers and creatives with fair remuneration
Capture and communicate the value of the arts
Develop an investment strategy for the arts including pathways to philanthropy and sponsorship
Recognise the evolution of art forms with new arts practices emerging.

Arts NT has identified five principles to underpin three priorities for the 10-year NT Arts Strategy as outlined in the Plan on a Page available under documents. We want to know if you believe that the principles and priories capture what you think is important to grow arts and culture in the Northern Territory.

The Northern Territory Government is seeking input on key issues within the arts sector that are important to you to develop a 10-year arts strategy.
Your feedback will inform the NT Government’s future investment in the arts so that all Territorians can access, participate and thrive in the creative and cultural life of the Territory.
With a draft vision to embrace the power of the arts to foster creativity and share our Territory stories, the strategy seeks to:
grow the arts sector's capacity and value
increase access and participation
foster artistic excellence and leadership.
The NT Arts Strategy Discussion Paper provides a starting point to commence this conversation. The Discussion Paper explores current contemporary issues impacting the arts sector.
We invite you to read the Discussion Paper and submit your response by 11.59pm on Sunday 10 March 2024.
