The Northern Territory Government (NTG) is committed to providing fishing opportunities for everyone across the Territory through a variety of recreational fishing infrastructure and services.

The construction of a proposed fishing jetty at Dudley Point (East Point Reserve) would provide safe land-based access to deeper water for anglers, over a greater tidal range.

A fishing jetty would be particularly beneficial for children, families and people with disability who may not otherwise be able to access safe fishing in these waters.

A jetty would also allow access to a large variety of fish species, and existing infrastructure would minimise development.

Background

The Northern Territory Recreational Fishing Development Plan 2023-33 supports the development of fishing opportunities and experiences for everyone in the community and includes a fishing jetty at East Point.

Dudley Point at East Point Reserve is proposed as a location for a fishing jetty and would be funded by the Territory’s $50 million RecFishing Futures Program.

This NTG initiative would see any future development progressed as a collaborative approach between NT Fisheries - Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade (DITT) and Infrastructure Delivery - Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics (DIPL).

Environment

DIPL undertook a self-assessment in accordance with the NT EPA’s guidance and determined that there was no potential for significant impacts, and a referral under the Environment Protection Act 2019 was not required.

The results of the self-assessment indicates that the risk of potential impacts on NT EPA factors and objectives is either unlikely or avoidable through mitigation measures.

These measures would be developed and monitored through a construction Environmental Management Plan, if the project proceeds.

Authority Certificate

An Authority Certificate was issued to DIPL by the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority on 26 April 2023, and is valid for 24 months.

The certificate notes a place of historical significance to Aboriginal Custodians is located within the subject land and that works in the overlapping area do not extend down the escarpment to the waterline.

Construction is not anticipated to impact on these overlapping areas and appropriate access restrictions would be established around the construction site.

Heritage

The NT Heritage Register shows the proposed site is not impacted by development. A listed heritage site is noted as being nearby but construction is not likely to impact on the site.

What's next

Once complete, results will be collated and made available on dipl.nt.gov.au/projects.

If the survey results support a fishing jetty at Dudley Point, DIPL will consult with key stakeholders on the timeframe and best way to progress the project.
