The Northern Territory Planning Commission, with support from the Department of Lands, Planning and Environment, is reviewing the Alice Springs Regional Land Use Plan 2016 to help guide future land use and development across the Alice Springs region.

The review will look at how Alice Springs and the surrounding region may change over time, and what this means for future land use planning. It will bring together community feedback, local knowledge, technical information and stakeholder input to help identify priorities, opportunities and challenges.

The first stage of the review is focused on listening and learning. The Commission wants to understand what people value about Alice Springs and what is important for the future. This information will help build the evidence base for the next stages of the review, before future planning directions are developed.

What is a Regional Land Use Plan?

A Regional Land Use Plan sets out a long-term vision for the future of a region and helps guide how land is used and developed over time.

The Regional Land Use Plan forms part of the Strategic Framework within the NT Planning Scheme. It provides the overarching regional context for future planning decisions and helps inform the operation and ongoing development of the NT Planning Scheme.

The current Alice Springs Regional Land Use Plan was prepared in 2016. Since then, Alice Springs has experienced significant economic, social and demographic change, alongside evolving community expectations, emerging opportunities and ongoing challenges. Reviewing the Plan now provides an opportunity to ensure it remains relevant, evidence-based and responsive to the needs of the community.
