Aerodrome Flood Resilience Study
The Department of Logistics and Infrastructure is undertaking a planning study to better understand how flooding affects aerodromes across the Northern Territory.
We are seeking local knowledge, insights and data about how flooding affects 68 aerodromes across the NT to help inform the planning study.
You can provide input by sharing your feedback, knowledge and data on the interactive map. Simply drop a pin on the location and add your comments.
Feedback will help to deliver a framework for the Northern Territory Government to prioritise future aerodrome upgrades and infrastructure and strengthen their flood resilience.
Overview
Flooding can significantly disrupt aerodrome operations and cause long-term damage to aerodrome infrastructure, affecting critical air access for remote communities and businesses.
Without reliable access to an aerodrome remote communities may lose access to essential emergency medical and evacuation services, supply transport and connectivity to regional centres, particularly during the wet season.
Currently, there is limited data about flooding at aerodromes across the NT.
The planning study will identify opportunities to improve aerodrome resilience to extreme weather events and provide a framework for future infrastructure upgrades.
SCP Consulting is delivering this planning study with support from True North Strategic Communication.
There is currently no funding commitment to implement the recommendations or outcomes of the planning study.
What are aerodromes?
An aerodrome is any area, including buildings and equipment, used for the arrival, departure and movement of aircraft. Aerodromes are sometimes referred to as small airports, airfields or airstrips.
There are more than 400 aerodromes in the NT, with the NT Government supporting the maintenance of 68 aerodromes across the Top End, Big Rivers, Arnhem, Daly, Barkly and Central Australia regions. The majority are in regional towns and communities with a small number located on pastoral leases or within National Park areas.
Get involved
The Department of Logistics and Infrastructure is seeking local knowledge, insights and data about how flooding affects NT aerodromes to help inform the planning study. The study aims to understand:
- how aerodromes are currently used
- how aerodromes are impacted by flooding, including impacts to the aerodrome surface and infrastructure
- how aerodromes operate during flooding, especially access for evacuation and emergency response situations
- aerodrome flood mitigation priorities of local communities
Consultation is open for 8 weeks from Monday 19 October to Friday 18 December 2026.
