Balanced Environment Strategy

Territorians have a strong cultural identity, rich traditions and a unique understanding and affinity with our natural environment. From our tropical north to our red centre, the Northern Territory is a wonderful place to live.

The Northern Territory Government has released its Balanced Environment Strategy Discussion Draft for public consultation and we want to hear from Territorians about their vision for the environment – now and into the future.

The draft Balanced Environment Strategy Discussion Draft provides a framework to ensure the Territory succeeds in a way that complements our unique Territory environment and lifestyle, including through

  • Risk-based regulation of activities
  • The use of the best available scientific knowledge to guide our decision making
  • Strengthening of our regulatory system and making it more efficient and transparent
  • The planning of our cities, towns and infrastructure to ensure a balance between development and sustainability is achieved.

The draft Strategy supports the NT Government's Strong Society, Confident Culture Strategy and Framing the Future and provides a coordinated whole of government approach to the future of the Territory.

Following community feedback, the Balanced Environment Strategy will be the roadmap for ensuring the Territory's environmental performance is strong and that there is a robust regulatory system in place to safeguard our environment as our economies and communities grow over time.

Territorians are encouraged to have their say and provide feedback on the draft Strategy. Comments can be provided through taking a short online survey or via email until 31 March 2016, or in person at one of the community consultation forums being held in February 2016.
